September is National Suicide Awareness Prevention Month; suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States, killing on average 121 people per day (44,193 people annually). For every person who successfully commits suicide, there are an additional 25 people who attempt. Due to to the stigma surrounding suicide and mental health, suicides are generally underreported and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) estimates the actual number of deaths to be staggeringly higher.
Great Spirits is hoping to raise both awareness of and financial support for the issues of suicide education and prevention by holding a benefit art show, Light the Way, on Saturday, September 23 from 7:00pm - 11:00pm. Artists from around the country will be portraying their candle-themed submissions. All proceeds from the Light the Way art show will be donated to the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention.
From 9am-5:00pm that same day, we'll be hosting a $50 flash tattoo event. Five artists will be tattooing candle-themed flash with 100% of all proceeds (including artists' tips) donated to AFSP.
